Seeds: “For nearly 100 years, Planned Parenthood has promoted a commonsense approach to women’s health and well-being, based on respect for each individual’s right to make informed, independent decisions about health, sex, and family planning” (Planned Parenthood). Because of the nature of this health care provider, Planned Parenthood has made national headlines. The clinic offers affordable care for all women, including cancer screenings, birth control, STD testing for men and women, body image and relationship education, pregnancy advising, and health insurance services. However, they also offer abortion services in both in-clinic and pill form.
Core: Abortion is a controversial issue in international politics and society. In the United States specifically, conservative and liberal beliefs differ starkly on the issue. On one hand, the Republican Party, which generally reflects traditional values, is a strong opponent of abortion. The Democratic Party, however, is generally more lenient, if not supportive of the topic.
Leaves: Recently, Planned Parenthood has faced extensive scrutiny following a bill in Congress to defund the initiative, which was vetoed by President Obama. Mirroring the collective opinions of their parties, Republican and Democratic citizens have raised debates over the issue. However, the primary reason for opposition is rooted in the misconception that government funding aids abortions. In reality, only 3% of federal dollars go towards abortion services, while the remainder of the funds support other women’s health services. “I’m obviously not only against defunding Planned Parenthood, but I would like to see Planned Parenthood even get more funding, because oftentimes it is both [people’s] first and the last resort for healthcare,” said Democratic presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton.
Food for thought: Where do you stand on the topic of abortion? Do you support giving the clinic government funding, especially if it is supporting other necessary services? How do you feel about the fact that the political parties are staunchly pro-life or pro-choice? Tell us what you think.
