Seeds: In June of this year the Filipino populace elected a new president named Rodrigo Duterte. He won handily, as he was appreciated for his strict policies on crime and corruption. However, he has earned some negative attention from the international community in the past few months. He has encouraged extrajudicial killings (not legally sanctioned–like vigilantism) by citizens and police of suspected of drug addicts and dealers. Over 3000 people have died. The U.S., the UN and the EU have all condemned his policies as a violation of human rights.
Core: More recently, Duterte has called President Obama a “son of a whore” and has told him to “go to hell.” In the recent past, the Philippines has had amicable ties and significant military alliances with the United States. Though in the past few weeks, Duterte has been sending mixed messages. While the current defense treaties and military alliances are in place, top US diplomats are unsure as to what Duterte will decide to do in the future.
Skin: Duterte really has some interesting quotes: “"Hitler massacred three million Jews. Now, there is three million drug addicts. I'd be happy to slaughter them." If you want to read more, here.
Leaves: While the Philippines has been in varying degrees of instability for many years, Duterte could cause more harm. Until he speaks or acts, he is quite unpredictable.
Food For Thought: What do you think of Duterte? Do you think he will try and lessen ties with the US? Do you think another country needs to intervene?
