Seeds: Rodney King, Tamir Rice, Keith Scott, Eric Garner, Freddie Gray, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, Terrence Crutcher. The list of victims of police brutality seems to be never ending. This week, another name has been added to the list: Deborah Danner, a 66 year old woman with known mental illness.
Core: Yesterday, (Tuesday October 18) police arrived at the Bronx apartment of Ms. Danner after receiving a call about her acting irrationally. Sergeant Hugh Barry entered Danner’s bedroom where she stood with a pair of scissors. Although Barry was able to convince Ms. Danner to put down the pair of scissors, she later attempted to hit the sergeant with a baseball bat. Barry then shot Danner twice in the torso, eventually causing her death.
Skin: News of this police shooting has been buried underneath a mountain of presidential election coverage. The third and final debate is airing tonight (Wednesday October 19) and most news sources have turned their attention to debate commentary and predictions.
Leaves: Mayor De Blasio and the NYPD have both recognized this recent shooting as a failure for the police department. Sergeant Barry was stripped of his gun and badge shortly after the shooting, however, a lengthy investigation is most likely forthcoming.
Food For Thought: Do you think there is a solution to police brutality? Should Sergeant Barry be fired?
