Seeds: Throughout the course of this year’s presidential election, you may have heard many mentions of an organization called Planned Parenthood. It has become somewhat of a buzzword in the world of politics, but you may not really know what it means or what it does. Well, that’s what we’re here for.
Core: Planned Parenthood is a non profit organization that is dedicated to women’s health. Although it is most well known for its administering of abortions, there is a dispute about what percentage of Planned Parenthood’s work is abortion related. The other services provided by Planned Parenthood include pregnancy testing, providing women with birth control options, testing for and treating STDs, and providing sexual education to both men and women.
Skin: Last year, you probably heard a lot of talk about Planned Parenthood after a misleading and disturbing video of a stillborn baby was included in an anti-abortion documentary. After investigation, it was found that the video was not actual footage of an abortion and was not even taken at a Planned Parenthood clinic, though many still cite it as fact.
Leaves: After the results of yesterday’s election, some fear that Planned Parenthood will be defunded under a Trump administration and that the future of the organization is in peril. Others rejoice at the idea of this, because they are pro-life or do not want their tax dollars to fund services such as these. However, yesterday President Obama proposed legislation that may protect Planned Parenthood from defunding indefinitely.
Food For Thought: What do you think about Planned Parenthood? Do you think President Obama will be able to protect Planned Parenthood in the final months of his presidency?
