Seeds: Since Trump became the President-Elect in the early hours of November 9, all eyes have turned to his picks for the various cabinet positions for which the President is responsible. Since then, Trump has slowly but surely filled the positions.
Core: Some of the more noteworthy cabinet positions that have been filled thus far include Senator Jeff Sessions for Attorney General, former right wing media executive Steve Bannon for chief strategist, and former CEO of Exxonmobil Rex Tillerson for Secretary of State. The list of cabinet positions is pretty lengthy, so for a comprehensive breakdown of each possible candidate, here.
Skin: Many of Trump’s picks have been harshly criticized by politicians on both sides of the aisle. Jeff Sessions, Trump’s nominee for Attorney General, has a reputation for making multiple racist remarks, a reputation that destroyed his chances at becoming a district court judge in the 80’s. More recently, many are concerned about Trump’s pick for Secretary of State Rex Tillerson due to his ties to the Russian government made during his time as CEO for Exxonmobil.
Leaves: Most of these picks made by Trump will be up for approval by the Senate. Despite the fact that the Republicans have the majority in the Senate, at this moment there seems as if there is a possibility that Trump’s pick for Secretary of State may be an issue. In order for Tillerson to be confirmed, Trump can only afford to lose two Republican votes (assuming that all Democrats vote against the confirmation). Thus far, Senator Marco Rubio, Senator Lindsey Graham, and Senator John McCain have all spoken out against the nomination, making it possible that Rex Tillerson will not be approved by the Senate.
Food For Thought: What do you think of Trump’s cabinet picks? How do you think the Senate will approach these confirmation hearings?
