Seeds: From the Supreme Court case Roe vs. Wade to controversies over the organization Planned Parenthood, the conversation surrounding abortion has always been a contentious one in the US. Recently, Ohio lawmakers passed a bill called the Heartbeat Bill to make abortion illegal once the fetal heartbeat can be detected (the fetus would be approximately six weeks old).
Core: Many are upset about the possible passing of this law, arguing that it is both unfair and unconstitutional, especially since many females do not know they are with child six weeks into the pregnancy. Furthermore, this law would outlaw abortion even in the cases of rape, incest, or danger to the mother’s life. As of right now, Republican Governor of Ohio John Kasich has 10 days to sign off on this bill in order to make it a law. If he does sign it, or if the Ohio state House and Senate override his veto, the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio already stated they would press a legal challenge against the law, effectively already taking this potential law to court.
Skin: Many are outraged by the proposition of this bill. In fact, there was a large negative response on Twitter. Others who find abortion morally wrong are mostly happy with this bill, however, there are still others who believe abortion at any time is immoral. As for America as a whole, polls taken by Gallup have concluded that the general opinion of abortion has not changed drastically in the last 20 years.
Leaves: Many believe that this sudden push for a more conservative bill is a result of the election of Donald Trump. Conservative lawmakers are hopeful, as the right winged President-elect will most likely appoint a new conservative Supreme Court justice. The lawmakers in Ohio saw this as an opportunity to push this bill forward, as it had already been pushed a few years ago, but never made it past the Senate.
Food for Thought: What do you think about abortion? Is six weeks too soon? Should a mother be allowed to decide to have an abortion if the child is a result of incest or rape? Or is abortion always immoral?
