Seeds: The morning of June 13, 1994, the two bodies of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were found next to bloody shoe prints and puddles of blood that didn’t belong to the victims. American icon, actor, and pro football player O.J. Simpson became the primary suspect when police caught him after a 60 mile car chase and noticed he had a cut on his hand. 90 million viewers tuned into the car race for a total of 3 hours, foreshadowing the large following the case would have throughout O.J.’s 9 months trial.
Core: Despite the fact that the evidence was seemingly stacked against him, O.J. pleaded innocent. The case is known for publicizing figures like Kato Kaelin, a famous witness who still to this day believes O.J. is guilty, and the “dream team” of six defense lawyers that included Robert Kardashian (yes, THAT Kardashian). The defense lawyers fought the prosecutors by blurring the lines of the case by accusing detective, Detective Fuhrman of the LAPD of being racist and planting evidence (the matching black glove found at the crime scene) at OJ’s mansion. They supported their accusations by citing that Mr. Fuhrman had racist tendencies and had been caught saying the “N” word on several occasions. This added a whole new dimension to the dynamic of the case and divided the country on racial issues. Also, Mr. Cochran famously asked OJ to try on the glove that was found at Mr. Goldman’s feet. When the glove did not fit on Simpson’s hand, the lines were blurred even more.
Skin: The public was extremely invested in the OJ Simpson case. Every night, new updates would be given as people watched the drama unfold and awaited the final verdict. When OJ was deemed innocent by judge Lance Ito, many divided on the verdict, again sparking debate about race relations in America. Regardless, the truth about this American icon will never truly be known making this “the trial of the century.”
Leaves: Currently, Simpson is sentenced to 33 years in jail for committing assaults and armed robberies, crimes completely separate from his past case. He will potentially be released when he turns 70 in a few years. However, a new knife that could be the missing murder weapon was found at his estate by a construction worker, and could deter the judge from releasing him. Whether or not it is a weapon, remains unclear.
Food For Thought: Do you think OJ Simpson was/is innocent? Do you think that race had anything to do with the verdict or the media attention surrounding the case?
