Seeds: The Roman Catholic Church has long held a reputation of rigidity in the minds of Catholics and non-Catholics alike. As a result, the Catholic Church has seen a mass exodus of Catholics from the Church, especially among the youth. This decrease in numbers was partly why a more progressive leader like Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Pope Francis) was selected in 2013 after Pope Benedict XVI resigned.
Core: This week, in a long document called an Apostolic Exhortation, Pope Francis called for a change in the Catholic Church’s view of gay people, single parents, and straight, unmarried couples who live together. He encouraged their acceptance into the Church. These statements align with Pope Francis’ efforts to make the Catholic Church a more accepting place for all.
Skin: Some liberal Catholics have expressed disappointment, as they hoped the Pope would acknowledge same sex unions as equivalent to heterosexual unions. However, others see the Pope’s recent statements as groundbreaking.
Leaves: Each change in policy that Pope Francis has put forth seems to send shockwaves throughout the Church. Only time will tell if the reputation of the Catholic Church will change as Pope Francis’ time as Pope continues.
Food For Thought: Do you think the Pope’s words will make in actual change in the practices of the Church? Do you think that the Catholic Church will be successful in regaining their young followers?
