Seeds: The Zika Virus, a virus spread by mosquitoes in tropical areas, has slowly become rather infamous. Major outbreaks that started in South America now reach up to the Caribbean and recently, in Florida. To read about symptoms and effects of the Zika Virus, here is a helpful infographic.
Core: While there have been several known cases in the US, the majority of them have sprung from sexual transmission, rather than by mosquitoes. This means that the most detrimental mean of spreading the disease is not the main cause. This is good news; however, it should be noted that 4 cases were confirmed to be caused by mosquitoes, and have broken out in a town north of downtown Miami, Florida.
Skin: Since the Olympics are being held in Rio this year, the media has focused a lot of attention on the virus and some athletes may not attend the Olympics because of it. Also, many are concerned that international athletes will be infected, inevitably spreading the disease even more.
Leaves: Furthermore, in light of the news that mosquitoes are now carrying the disease in the US, it important now more than ever to know how to protect yourself. The CDC has released a guide that details the best methods of protection including warnings about not wearing mosquito repellent, unprotected sex with partners who have recently traveled (or not for that matter), and avoiding Zika infested areas if you are pregnant.
Food for Thought: What do you think about the spread of the Zika Virus? Are you concerned that there is not an actual cure for the virus? Do you think holding the games in Rio will be a problem?
