Seeds: The Republic of South Sudan only became a country in 2011. After decades of strife arising from the differences between the Black-African population in the southern parts of the country and the Arab-dominated Government and northern population. However, even within the south there were distinct groups vying for power. Long-time rivals the Nuer and Dinka tribes have been attacking each on and off other since then. Currently, Salva Kiir Mayardit of the Dinka tribe is the president, although Riek Machar of the Nuer tribe runs the rebel group that is fighting the established government. Last year a peace deal was signed, though the re-erupting violence in July is a setback towards this peace.
Core: The UN refugee agency just released that over 1 million refugees have fled South Sudan because of the civil war. As well as this, over 1.6 million are displaced within the country.
Skin: Celebrity George Clooney has been a known activist for aiding the displaced and poverty stricken in South Sudan. He campaigned for the indictment of Omar al-Bashir (the previous Sudanese leader) for war crimes in the ICC.
Food For Thought: Do you think that another country should formally step in to make sure that peace remains?
