Seeds: Kosovo is a small country on the border of Serbia and Albania. The land was historically disputed between the ethnic serbs and the ethnic albanians. When the Kosovo Liberation Army (called the KLA - a rebel group spearheaded by ethnic albanians) wanted to become a separate country from what was then Yugoslavia, NATO helped support the insurgencies (this happened in the ‘90s). Thousands of innocents were killed by the Serbian paramilitary troops, resulting in many international inquiries about respecting the human rights of Kosovars (ethnic Albanians in Kosovo). There was also significant violence inflicted by the rebel troops. Eventually, Kosovo officially seceded from Serbia in 2008.
Core: Today French police have arrested a former Prime Minister of Kosovo named Ramush Haradinaj who was a rebel commander in the Kosovo conflict. They based his arrest on a Serbian warrant. He has faced UN tribunals for war crimes before, Serbia insists he carried out campaigns of torture and murder against the Serbs, but nothing was ever proven.
Skin: Kosovo has reacted angrily towards the arrest, calling it “illegal and unfair.” Other than this, there has been little reaction or response.
Leaves: Members of the government of Kosovo are attempting to get Haradinaj released, however, given the disdain that the Serbs hold towards the rebel leader, it is not looking promising.
Food For Thought: Do you think Haradinaj will be released? Do you know anyone who was affected by the Kosovo War? Did you know about the War?
